Barak Building

Two and a half kilometres north of the Shrine of Remembrance, a face looks back along Swanston Street, an 85-metre high portrait of the distinguished William Barak on the facade of a city apartment tower. What began as a developer brief became a civic gesture and helped bring Melbourne's north end back to life.

"If you're lucky enough to visit the Shrine [of Remembrance] and look towards Carlton you'll see Uncle Barak's face standing over 30 stories tall overlooking Country today. Now that is an architectural feat that I would like to see again, more of our old people filling up the entire facades of buildings overlooking their landscape."

“Something like this has been a long time waiting, and I think it’s wonderful. My great grandfather would be so proud.”
